Happy to get your feedback! As you can imagine, I have lots of responsibilities so I can only check in to your comments once in a while. As I often post about tech related things, I do have developers check the comments in case they missed something.

If you have a site question, please use the online feedback form (under Help) to contact customer service as I do not read my blog daily. You can also read more about bug fixes and site status at the sitesupport blog or new things at the community blog.

Upgrades in Message Center

After sending out my personal newsletter, I received almost two thousand emails. I've replied to almost half of them but discovered that the message center had room for improvement. Ok, I knew it was slow but when you have lots of emails, it was worse.

The good news is that it's MUCH faster now. About 10x faster to show the message categories - which now also show two new categories for messages with flowers (did you know you earn 25 points for each message with flowers that you read?) and for gold members. We made the message show up INSTANTLY when you click on the left side list. We've also added a sort button so you can easily get to the oldest unread message - useful if you get a lot of messages and want to respond to the oldest one first. There are now icons to show which messages are from people in your hotlist or from friends. Finally, we put a "spam" button on the upper right-hand side so you can help us weed out inappropriate members faster (clicking on that button puts the member in a special review queue).

Let me know if you would like to see other upgrades to the Message Center. We have about 10 other projects related to improving speed and functionality of the site - but your feedback always helps us prioritize efforts. Thanks!

We are not directly affected by the Heartbleed exploit

As many new sources have reported on a widespread virus affecting website security called "Heartbleed", I wanted to let our members know that our network is not affected by it as we use different networking equipment than the type that are vulnerable. However, as there are many other websites that might be compromised, if you use the same password on multiple sites, it might be a good time to update your password both here and others sites. The issue is if your password is compromised on another site, hackers might use it to log in here.

You should try to use both numbers and upper/lower cased letters in your password. Avoid passwords like "password", "abc123", and "secret"... instead use ones like "3yAbt92". Some ways to help remember a password could be to remember a phrase like "tomorrow 3 friends will eat 6 apple pies = "T3fWe6Ap" (alternating upper and lower cased letters).

We have also recently upgrade the way that handle passwords in email to make our site more secure in the even that your personal email account (e.g., gmail, yahoo) get hacked.

Thanks

Easier way to upload photos and videos

We finally upgraded the way you can upload photos and videos. Now you can simply drag and drop files and they automatically get uploaded to your profile. You can then change the photos brightness, rotate, and draw on it (perfect for hiding your face or other people). Hopefully, you will like having both "uploading photos" and "managing photos" on the same page. The same upgrades were done for videos to make it easier to upload larger videos. As with any new product, there may be a few unexpected bugs so feel free to post here and our developers will work hard to fix them. Note: you'll need a browser that is less than 3-4 years old to use all of the upload and editing features.

While this was live for a couple of weeks, I was hesitant to post until the new instant messenger is fully improved and live. I was told that it's must more stable this week (especially for broadcasters with more than 500 viewers) and they are planning the final launch next week.

For this post, just wanted to tell you that our group chat software is now up to 3x faster. To speed it up, you'll need to update your settings as shown below. You can also view who you're chatting with by mousing over their usernames.

I'll post later about upgrades going on for our mobile product. Look tomorrow for friend network to be on mobile

New tools to combat spammers

The key mission of this site has always been to get people hooked up with real people. One of my biggest frustrations is with spammers trying to get member contact information so they can market websites and other things. A primary way they do this is to create a number of free accounts and then interact with members to ask them for personal email addresses or external IM account names. Not only does this put members at risk of spam, it reduces the credibility of our millions of real members, which then reduces member happiness and ultimately leads to lower revenue. It is in both the members and company's best interest to fight spammers.

For many years, we have had 10+ employee team using a 3 prong approach to combat spammers:

1. proactive delete accounts which appear to not be valid by using lots of secret techniques similar to how google/yahoo/etc look for spammers. While we delete most of the spammer accounts this way, it's not always obvious which accounts should be deleted.

2. reactively delete accounts that are reported by other members.

3. put limits on what personal contact information that can be shared between members during their first 2 email exchanges.

The third tool helps reduce spam by cutting off the reward of the spammer... that is, the members personal contact info. It also, however, upsets members who want to give this info right away. While I was away from the company, the management felt that improvements in the way we proactively delete accounts could enabling a softening of the "no contact info in the first 2 email exchange" rule.

Since I've returned, I've listened to member complaints about spammers and am making them a high priority.

To that end, we are again informing members not to share personal contact information on their first email. E.g., "To reduce abuse and ensure your message is delivered, please do not include your contact information in your first message to another member.".

This gives us permission not to forward the first two messages that either asks or gives for contact info.

I understand that this might upset members but I am confident that once we cut off spammer's motivation, we can improve the overall member experience.

We have also upgraded several internal tools recently and will continue to improve the process.

There are few things you can do to help as well. First is to continue report any member who appears to be sending spam. We will soon show the "report spam" button more prominently in the message center. Second, you can upload a photo of you and a piece of paper with your username on it. This way, you can have a verified photo which will give you more freedoms on the website.

Thanks for your suggestions!

Just a repost...

As the returning CEO of FriendFinder Networks, which operates AdultFriendFinder, I would like to personally thank you for being a member.

For those who don't know me, I founded AdultFriendFinder in 1996 while finishing my engineering Ph.D. at Stanford. Over the next 12 years, I led the team that created the largest adult community on the Internet – a place where adults meet, interact, and have a great time pursuing healthy, active, exciting sex lives. From the start, our primary goal was helping members find "success."
In December 2007, feeling a need to take on different challenges in life, I took a hiatus to pursue other projects and sold the company to a group of investors. Over the years, my influence on the quality and goals of the websites diminished, and I saw the site drift from its original, user-focused community.

I returned in December 2013 to change that and work hard with you to build the next era of AdultFriendFinder. I am now responsible for leading a reenergized team of developers and other employees who, like me, love the company and are passionate to make a difference in your life.

I waited a couple of months to email you as I wanted to first focus on improving AdultFriendFinder to a point where both you and I can see the difference a renewed emphasis on quality can make. We've already made over 1,000 design changes as well as many feature, site speed, and stability improvements, including:
  • Faster, more powerful search to make it easier to find just the right person
  • Upgraded Instant Messenger with better webcam integration
  • Many new features added to the mobile version of AdultFriendFinder
  • 10x faster browsing of your favorite members' photos and videos
  • Refreshed design of blogs, groups, and member magazine
  • Upgraded Friends Network where you can share private albums with friends
  • New video contests where you can see hundreds of fun videos!
  • We've heard your requests for things like improved user verification, a more gender-balanced membership base, and more opportunities to interact with members in your local communities – and we're working hard to fulfill them. Keep an eye on the site, my blog, and upcoming newsletters for lots more improvements – and a few surprises – in the months to come. While new features are fun to build, we are also committed to improving the stability and overall performance of the current site.

All of this is to help you better interact with others and have fun!

Now we need your help. Tell us what you think. Many of my priorities are set by you – the members. Please take a few moments and give your feedback and ideas in this survey. Thanks!

I'm honored that you've made AdultFriendFinder your home.

    Sincerely,

    Andrew Conru, Ph.D.
    CEO, FriendFinder Networks Inc.

I'm so happy to report that polls are now supporting optional photos. I've not personally tested them but if you report any problems in my post here, I'll make sure that it gets fixed. I have to check that if you ONLY post photos that it still lets you submit the poll. Have fun!

Happy to report that we have now updated the blogs, groups, and magazine articles to support up to 10 photo uploads. This is part of our ongoing push to upgrade all the community sections. This update also fixes the issues related to changes to the uploaded photos not showing up immediately.

We will update magazine advice lines next to support photos. I'm happy to get your ideas on other ways to improve the community sections. Some of ones we are considering are adding optional photos to polls and embedding videos in the posts.

The blogs now support up to 10 photos per post and a number of new formatting tags to give you more control of your post.

To put your main photo, you can use both the [image] or [image1] as shown below.

[image3] and [image5] corresponding to your 3rd and 5th photo uploaded.

You can resize photos and change the alignment using width/height and right/left tags such as
    [image2 right width=30 height=100]

The right/left tags are useful when you want your text to flow around such as the following. I've put the tags next the photo so you can see how it is do.

As some of you have noticed, there are multiple projects rolling out that are improving the website. Some early ones: In the message center, you can now delete individual messages and move conversations into folders. Extra cupid filters can be set to better target who you'll see on many pages. When you view your favorite photos, you can scroll through them 20x faster and browse large photos. Some of you may be seeing updates to the search results that make it faster, prettier and give you most options to find members. Similar updates for friend network, hotlist and others. The momentum is building.

Just let you know that there is now a much faster photo viewer on the profile page. Photos show up instantly when you click them OR when you move the arrow keys. The speed of photos was always a frustration to me so I'm happy to see it upgraded. Rumor has it that upgrades in the MC, friend network, and search are coming soon.

Note: If you don't see the left photo, you might need to type ctrl-shift-R to tell your browser to update the page.
